Today: Well It’s Not All Going To Plan

9 May

Don’t get me started.

O you’re here reading? Fair enough, I’ll enlighten you on a few things:

  • Charlie is starting a masters in Milton Keynes in October, I’m starting it the year later [YAY]
  • We have to move to Milton Keynes between now and October [EASY]
  • We are getting married in August [YAY]
  • Honeymoon in September [YAY]
  • Need to find a new job [NO BIGGIE]
  • We have to move out of this flat by June 21st [OK THATS MANAGEABLE]
  • Our invite RSVP deadline is June 21st [FORWARD IT YOU IDIOT]
  • Charlie finishes his current course on June 21st [OK..]
  • Nowhere in Cheltenham does a 12 week let that isn’t a holiday let or a bedsit [AWKWARD]
  • It’s currently 7 weeks till we have to move out [GETTING CLOSE]
  • We have to move out on a Friday [ARGH]

All of this would be fine if our landlords weren’t the worst organisation on the planet. They are not registered with any governing body, nor do they seem to understand that people live in the flat, hence it may not be in ‘pristine conditiong’ upon inspection. All their staff are miserable with horrific customer service/relation skills. As soon as we get our instructions for never having to talk to the poor excuse for a letting agent, they will be getting a complaint. I don’t care that we have to move out, it’s the owners decision to want to sell on. But we have been patronised and bullied to the point that I got ill I was so stressed out.

Apparently forgetting to hoover and using the toilet is grounds for them to inspect us again? UGH. Now wonder there were no agency fees, I would feel sick having to pay for any of their services.

They are Northwood letting agents in Cheltenham. This is their website: http://www.northwooduk.com/

NEVER USE THEM.

—————–

Right. Onto more positive things:

WE ARE MOVING TO MILTON KEYNES AAAAAHHHHHHHHH

Most of the wedding stuff is now organised! It is literally just minor details, and paying! We are getting RSVPs in and all is well 🙂 I have just found out as well that I can get ready at the venue, which is a massive load off my mind!

It is just our living arrangements now, if I had a job we would just move to MK sooner, but interviews/applications and everything take time.

Anyway, I’ve just made banana cake! AND it’s just cooked. tarra!

Today: Maintaining Positivity

31 Jul

I’ve hit another plateau of sorts, had a weigh in on Monday to find I had gained 4lbs. Which is hard to comprehend when I have been good with diet and the running this past week, So I’m on a bit of a downer from that, but as I’m not measuring my progress on weight really this time, It’s just a little set back.

Charlie and I have managed our runs, week 1 has been completed, and according to our training on http://www.therunningbug.co.uk, tomorrow, (Wednesday) is run 1 min walk 1min, repeat 10 times, last week was the same last wednesday except you only repeated it 8 times! That was a killer.

i’m happy we are sticking to it, however I am starting to feel it in my calf muscles. Charlie is 6ft 4ins so his legs are about 8meters long and I can match the impact pace of his feet, just not the stride length. That will be my next challenge to work on when I can manage the 5k.

Week 6 will be the point where I will be hitting running the mile without stopping (10 mins continuous run), it will be interesting to see where I am when it comes to then! My quickest mile I ever ran was 8mins 49 secs, which was a one-off!

Here is the training Charlie and I are completing (courtesy of therunningbug.co.uk) :

It’s all moving forward!

We are going to have to find somewhere else to run soon as the park we go round is getting a bit small! Thinking about Pittville Park in Cheltenham, but that is a little bit of a walk from us.

It’s been a good week for wedding planning as well! We’ve decided on a layout and possible background for our invitations. It’s progress at least 🙂

The flat is going well, I have taken up baking, Which is good because I can minimize/neglect any oil and all the rubbish that the shops add in! I’m pretty good at making muffins to.

It’s also now the F1 break. I’m going to be at a loss for 4 weeks! Except for my holiday, where I will be lazy 🙂

Keep going everyone, I’ve managed it, ups and downs I just have to keep looking forward, it’s small changes that makes the biggest difference! (I’ve stopped having crisps, butter in my sandwiches, and sugar in my tea!) and fruit as snacks, very filling!!!

Does anyone have any tips to what they have read? Please comment!

Today: It’s a scorcher

24 Jul

So since the shift in the Gulf stream North it has suddenly become like a hot sweaty bundle of pure joy here in Cheltenham. Which is fantastic for the mood and the tan, but not so good on the body image.

Why?

Well when things get hot they expand? I am sure that this is what has happened to my body. Everything is in proportion EXCEPT my stomach. it just seems to have expanded to the size of a balloon and it really doesn’t seem like it’s going down, I lose weight (3lbs so far) but it doesn’t go from there. I really don’t know how to cut it down.

I’m a firm believer in “targeted toning” but “non-targeted weight loss” ie, you can build muscle in specific places, but you cannot lose weight specifically.

Charlie and I are back on week one of the running challenge (check #sofato5k on twitter for progress) and we’ve done 2 days so far. I guess I have to just “wait and see” some results. Worst advice EVER. I hate just waiting around, I’m really to impatient, I guess that’s why I’m so up for having something to do everyday. I want to come home and do my DVD‘s, or try going for a run,  or blog more. I think of all these things when I’m at work, I just guess that when I get home I just need to stop.

And however much Charlie comes running with me, sometimes I need him to go in the other room. He will go, after I’ve pushed him away and then I feel bad for telling him to effectively “sod-off”. I need to see progress quickly or I lose motivation. A bad thing I know, but as i’ve said before, I’m impatient.

My star chart is still going OK. It’s just my motivation to carry on, and that’s bringing me down. Again.

So it’s a fat day. A fat week, an epic bloated and fatty day. yuck.

Today: The Olympic Shame

16 Jul

I hope you read the following letter, and pass it on.

To Whom it may concern,

I was dead excited to receive an Olympic ticket allocation. I was also excited to see that there would be a travel card included to, having just moved out to Cheltenham, this was going to be expensive.

Except that is where my excitement stalls.

The travel card is only valid for London Zones, meaning that I have to pay to get to London either by train or coach. £100 for the train to arrive in time to miss the first hour of event and then walk and queue to get in, or the coach, well I tried to find this out, but apparently the Royal Artillery Barracks isn’t an Olympic Venue that coaches travel to, or at least that is what the useless journey planner with it’s “book now” option won’t let me pick. I can select this venue but the redirect won’t let me do it. Useless.

So I have to sell my tickets. Why? I can’t afford over £100 for travel to the Olympic games. That’s 2 times the cost of the tickets. A cost I doubt I will get back because of the poor organisation with the Olympic ticket allocation. I have to post them back at my own expense, then hope they sell them on and allocate them back out to ensure I get the ticket price refunded. Which doesn’t include the £6 delivery charge.

So I would like to voice my utter disgust at LOCOG, Yes well done you have ripped down peoples homes to create a fantastic Olympic park. A park where everyone is proud. But be damned if anyone can get there who lives outside the Olympic travel zones.

I hope my frustration has come across, if it hasn’t then rest assured that I will not be the only hacked off one, There are already plenty out there who didn’t get close enough to tickets, even though you said “no tickets have gone to corporate sponsors”, I guess I’ll have to enter a Llyods TSB competition to go instead. O LOOK.

The games will be a success, but your organisational skills will be used as an example on how to royally piss off a nation.

Yours

Harriet

—————

Thank you LOCOG for being useless. Tickets are now VOID.

Today: Promising Progress

15 Jul

Today I checked up on my star chart expecting there to be like no progress since my initial 3 stars i had last week.

I was pleasantly surprised, even though I am the one putting the stars down, It was still nice to properly look at it and realise “yeah, I’ve done that in a week!”

My biggest achievement has been getting over my exercise starting phobia thingy. Ok it’s not really a phobia, but It is pretty hard to just get started when you haven’t done any for a while. I have managed to do the pilates DVD. Not the biggest achievement in the World, but since I have been ill (as well as Charlie too!) We haven’t really been able to do much.

Although I’ve been keeping the calories down from 2000, I haven’t hit the 1500 mark more than twice. 😦

Next week (ie, from tomorrow) Charlie and I will be starting this 5K training  which I am determined to do rain or shine. It is just a case of not getting settled when I get home from work, which is hard because that’s what you want to do when you get home from work isn’t it? Just chill out and relax. So I am going to have to get my running stuff ready on the sofa before I go to work, so I can just get changed, get Charlie and go! It’s a run for 1 min and walk for 2 mins. Then repeat 5 times. This is different to what I was doing before because it’s outside!!

ooooOOOOOooooo

Shocking isn’t it. I’ve been looking for 10k races in my local area (Gloucestershire/Cheltenham) but there aren’t any at the moment, I think that would give me real motivation to run and train. but I really have to be able to run for 30 mins before I can arguably say I can run. How do people keep their motivation up whilst they are running?! I mean I’ve heard of people saying they have a goal to run to, or they just don’t get bored, but I’m just so aware of everything around me and how fast I’m going, and how long I’ve been running for that I just can’t be arsed to go on. It’s a crappy reason but It’s just like I hit a wall, 9 mins in, that means I can’t go any further whether I want to or not.

Who knows. I’ll see what happens next week. I need Charlie in on this one, so I hope that he’s feeling better!

Today: Cheltenham Science Festival

15 Jun

The Cheltenham Science festival, somewhere I have never been, something I have never heard of, with someone I didn’t expect.

I moved to Cheltenham in November 2011, and the festivals they hold annually were all becoming an interesting adventure. Adventures I didn’t really have tome to go on. Until my fiance Charlie sprung surprise tickets for me and him for the science festival.

Expecting an obscure lecturer talking about a new exciting subject, I was thrilled. But I never knew just how thrilled I would be. Sponsors GE Aviation were there, and as i approached the tent the familiar noise of an F1 car filled my ears.

It was none other than Caterhams Chief Technical officer Mike Gascoyne being interviewed by BBC radio 5 lives F1 commentator James Allen.

I loved it, I honestly couldn’t fault the interview. We found out how he effectively lucked his way into what turned into a very lucrative F1 career, how he met a long-haired 18 year old Spaniard called Fernando Alonso, and how the mute button at Jordan Grand Prix was a useful tool when dealing with Eddie Jordan.

There was even time for a Q&A session from the audience, and I’ll run through a couple of questions that I remember, as not only did I find the questions interesting, some of Mike Gascoyne’s answers were very telling of an incredibly intelligent man.

Question 1 was about more woman on F1. Not only drivers, but as team members as well. The question came from a woman in the front row, who obviously (or what seemed to be) was trying to get a generic “well boys are stronger than girls” answer. But his response was different, far from a political answer about fairness and equality, he went down the ‘hired on merit’ route. Which is correct. The fact of the matter is, there are more male’s doing engineering than females, more males who prefer motorsport, and so the odds are stacked against us in making up any form of majority.

James Allen also pointed out that there are plenty of girls in karting, but it is a challenge to get to the physical fitness, and to get the sponsorship. Something that is a struggle for both sexes.

The next question i remember was regarding innovation and the budget cap. Mike Gascoyne lis in favour of this budget cap, however the person asking the question also asked if he was in favour of scrapping all the limiting technical regulations. Something which Gascoyne said no to.

“…all regulations are to do with speed. The drivers body may survive a high speed impact but his internal organs would be scrambled…”

Seems legit to me.

Another question related to the one above, about the budget cap, but was related more along the sponsors route. This flustered Mike Gascoyne and from what I could tell there was no actual answer to the question. He skirted around it whilst mentioning resources from GE aviation and the resources of RedBull and Ferrari.

My opinion? GE are providing alot of ‘in-kind’ contributions if the budget cap goes ahead.

The final question was just annoying because somebody hadn’t done their research. It mentioned specific formula one degrees. Which there are none, there are motorsport degrees, which won’t become redundant after 1 season, which is what she was suggesting. Someone just wanted to ask a question…

i loved it all. I’m gutted I didn’t get to ask my question regarding tyre testing and practice sessions, but my desire to work in science and engineering has been re-ignited. Thank you Cheltenham Science Festival!

Today: Preparations

13 Jun

Soon to be in a new flat 🙂

Soon to have rooms to organise 🙂

Soon to have Wedding prep to do 🙂

Soon to have my fully fledged kick started diet going again.

Lots to look forward to in the coming couple of weeks, I’m excited for it all 🙂

Playing house is something I have been excited about since I moved to Cheltenham, making it mine and Charlie’s own 🙂 cooking what we want, cleaning when we want… I really can’t wait!

I also get to start the diet plan in preparation for the wedding! 14 months left till the big day and I really can’t wait until I can plan meals BEFORE i buy the food, instead of looking in the freezer and seeing what’s about.

I was hoping to start a new gym routine this week, a pretty intense one at that, but I have had a day of interruptions and then after today, I have another interruption 😦 I’m gonna get really into it all when I have *just* that little bit more control over what I can do/eat.

I’m going to have my bike back here so I can cycle from home to the gym, instead of getting the bus everywhere!

Lots to look forward to, and lots to blog about. CAN’T WAIT!

Today: Out the Window.

13 May

No… not something literally out of the window. My food plan from a previous post did. It would have gone so well, but halfway through the week I got epically bored. And didn’t eat well AT ALL.

I also ended up going to Cardiff this weekend, which resulted in more bad eating 😦 Long story as to why I went to cardiff, the short version is me not being very good at Long distant relationships.

I’ve come up with a new approach to my diet. I’ve meal planned. every day. All except breakfast, which I will see how my milkshake goes on Monday before I decide what else to have for the rest of the week. 1800 calorie aim for each day, where one day a week I’m allowed to eat whatever I want. This is apparently good because when I come off the diet, I’ll be able to maintain the weight, otehrwise my body will hate the shock of more calories and I will get my tum back!

Since all my weight is between the bottom of my boobs and my knees, it looks like I have alot of cardio work to do!

It’s a nice running week this week, M/T/W/Th runs, then Fri off. I can’t run at the weekend because I just get freaked out running outside at the moment. I’m so conscious about road running! It’s ok when I go home to visit my parents because I run round a field. But in Cardiff it’s up and down a main road. With loose paving slabs… as my rolled ankle from the weekend will testify.

I haven’t discovered anywhere in Cheltenham yet, I could go exploring, but since my gym is on my route home, I just go there straight from work! Means I can do weights as well, I think when I get to running for 5 miles I will need to run outside. But that;s still quite a way off, as I get hit with cramp from about 1.5 miles in. I’m excited to make it to 2 miles non stop.

I’m also going to start up the sponsored diet thing again. I’ll start a new graph and I will keep you all updated. I’m determined to not only lose the final 15lbs, but raise the remaining £85 to get to my £100 target.

This is the start of the “I will be a size 10 bride” project. But that will be on my tumblr site more than here… (take a look! http://www.harriparf.tumblr.com)

Right. Off to bed. got a hefty Monday ahead of me! got a morning weigh in for the start of the new sponsored stretch!

Today: The food plan

6 May
The current Diet Coke logo was adopted in 2007

Staple for an interesting day drink

It’s really really hard to diet when you are depending on someone else buying the food for the week.

I’m not depending, I mean, It’s my other halfs Nan, who lets me live with her, for free, won’t let me contribute to the food shopping either. She will let me tell her what I would like, however due to refrigeration/freezer space (She likes to be prepared for say… a Nuclear attack) I don’t ask for anything more than salad things.

I would like to say now, I’m not complaining.

It just means that my diet will revolve around what hasn’t expired in the fridge/freezer, and after a couple of close calls with food poisoning and one actual case which knocked me for six, I’m very picky about what I eat.

So I’m writing this to be a plan for my food. depending on what is in the fridge.

So on Monday, I will still be in Cardiff:

Brekkie: Tea, Bacon x 3, 1 x Chiabatta roll, butter (1 serving) 390 calories

Lunch: Fajitas x 2 chicken. – 190 calories per serving. Contains 1xOnion 2xPeppers 500g chicken, fajita mix, salsa.

glass of coke 105 calories

Then I return to Cheltenham,

So for tea, I was thinking                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Can of diet coke, 3xfish fingers, 2x bread, 1 serving of butter. 399 calories.

Total for the day to then be: 1274 calories.

I’m planning on going to the gym tomorrow night so that I can do my run, I’ve missed my runs since thursday because I really messed my feet up. I couldnt even walk the next day so I decided it was for the best!

It’s another 3 mile day, So I will defo try to whack it out! gotta try and get it less than 38 mins this time.

The rest of the week will be very similar, owing to when I say what food I fancy that day, Nan will buy me a weeks supply…

Brekkie: Coffee, Sugarpuffs and milk – 170 calories [I have this every day, I’ve tried fruit but I just get hungry later on in the morning!]

Lunch: cous cous, 1/4 onion, celery, 1/2 can of tuna – 222 calories. I like it with the onion, It adds a nice kick to the flavour 🙂 [May sway cous cous for a half portion of pasta]

Snacks: Banana, special K bar – 158 calories. This may increase as I am going to the gym on Tu/Th/Fri

Dinner: Protein shake and bananna – 320 calories. Again, may go up as I may need a bit more to keep me going!

I’m in cheltenham at the weekend as well, which means I may have the protein shake for lunch on the saturday (It’s a roast at the in-laws on the sunday) Then something a bit more creative for dinner on saturday evening.

I also have found a magic special drink I use for running. I’ve read that cramping can be caused by lack of electrolytes including salt, So I make a strong Orange squash with just a pinch of salt in. It really works wonders, and I don’t get thirsty as much as to compared when I drink water on its own. which is a pretty massive win!!

I just hope this time when I run My right foot won’t lean inwards, or that I have to run with my left foot facing outward!! I’m compensating for something, but I can’t figure out why, I know I run pretty flat footed, and I’m conscious to make an effort to change that, but I’ve run before and I was fine, so I’m not 100% sure what’s going on.

My running days this week? Well as I’m not heading to Cardiff to allow my Charlie to prepare for exams, It’s M/Tu/Th/F/Sa. I may go to the gym on Wednesday anyway and do more toning and stretching exercises. Maybe look into strength and conditioning training, then Post what I decide to do here :p

I’ll keep you all updated anyhow. Just wanted to let you know I hadn’t just given up!!

Side note: I haven’t had a McDonalds in 130 days.

Today: Week one Tomorrow

25 Dec

So here we are about to venture into week one. I have weighted myself and I am at a weight of 174lbs, with a BMI of 28.1 – classed as the far end of the overweight spectrum.

Week one will comprise of me stressing about Christmas, going shopping at the boxing day sales and getting back in the flow of recording everything I eat, before returning to Cheltenham on the 28th to sign up to my local gym and start the massive exercise regime (thank you to my good friend Stephen who has written one previously for me… I’ll be using it again!) which I will post up in the exercise section later in the week.

Not really sure how I feel about this, i’m well up for it, I have just eaten a mahooooosive feast today as it’s Christmas so I feel like i’m going to be full for the next few days!

Plenty of meat now in the house so the first thing i’m cutting out is BREAD. I love bread so this is going to be SUPER hard. Pasta, crisps, high fatty foods and drinks (so no pizza, cider, beer, mocha’s from COSTA 😦 ) all completely cut out for the next month. Then easing them back in, but in MUCH smaller portions, who knows, I may even find an alternative to one of them that is healthier AND better for you…. But when I say you, I obviously mean me.

So wish me luck! I think I may go downstairs and sample some of the xmas biscuits before all this starts tomorrow. You’ll hear from me soon 🙂

Please visit the pages under the Sponsored Diet pages. There is this first blog, the link to my just giving page, and the first post in the weight tracker.

You can also sponsor me by texting “DIET59 £1” to 70070, it’s only £1 and it’s for a great cause!
